But what is powerlifting and how can you become strong?
Powerlifting in a few words
Powerlifting is a competition sport where 3 exercises are performed: Squat, Bench press and Deadlift. After performing the big 3 exercises all the weights lifted are added up to a total weight. Then your total is compared to totals in your weight class. The one with the highest total wins.
Powerlifting makes you strong
The three exercises of powerlifting are very effective at making you strong. They are what we call compound exercises. In contrast with isolation exercises, compound exercises use all muscles together. By using all the muscles at the same time you are able to lift more weight. By following a good training program your body gets used to heavier and heavier weights making stronger as time passes by.
The importance of a good program
Some people want to be as strong as the influencers they follow on Instagram or Youtube but don’t understand how to build a good program. The best powerlifters have programs specially tailored for their needs. When you start out powerlifting and follow a good program you should be getting stronger every week and eventually every month. The more advanced you become, progress will become slower. If you have just started out and you are not becoming stronger at a fast rate you are probably doing something wrong.
